About Victor Hugo
17 years ago a broker said that a good reason to sell some
shares when they were in profit was "to leave some for the next
man..." Well no one ever got poor taking profits, but it started our
editor thinking.

TASSA is a non-profit association of members formed in 1994
and promotes professionalism in the use of Technical Analysis as
well as knowledge and use of TA for managing risk and investment
strategy. Recognising the bridge between Technical and Earnings
Analysis is one of the most important trends in modern
investing. The association also aims to promote a relatively new
discipline in Southern Africa, although well established
internationally. More and more investors are realising the
benefits of technical analysis as a tool to make better
investment decisions.
No need to be a technical analysis expert! Please come along.
After all, technical analysis is "fundamental" to good
investment decisions - so we welcome earnings analysts and
aspirant technicians as well.
We look forward to seeing you every second Wednesday of the
month at 17h50 for 18h00 at First
National Bank Conference Centre, Grayston Drive (300 metres east
of Rivonia Road), Sandton, Johannesburg.
Cost R40 for members and R80 for non- members. We usually
finish at about 19h30.
Best regards
Victor Hugo
Chairman TASSA
Past TASSA
Meetings
At the October TASSA meeting on Wednesday 11th October - Daan
Joubert, analyst, strategist and market commentator - will
be leading a discussion on market trends - particularly relevant
in the current uncertain phase. Victor Hugowill
demonstrate some Elliott counts on indices, currencies, rates
and shares on the Get system. There will be plenty of
interaction with those present.

At the September TASSA meeting
we showed a CD
Video authored by one of the worlds leading practitioners and
teachers of Technical Analysis, Martin J. Pring. Mr Pring has
kindly agreed that TASSA can screen certain of his materials by
prior arrangement. The title of the video is "A Basic
Introduction to Technical Analysis". For those who already have a working knowledge of TA and how
to invest using it, dont be put off by the title. Mr Pring
has a lot to offer both the beginner and experienced technical
trader.
At the August TASSA meeting
Andrew Patterson
came all
the way from Cape Town and presented "Some JSE Technical
Pointers" with reference to his charts and systems. Andy is one of the country's leading professional Technical
Analysts - and has had extensive experience doing analysis for
institutional and private clients. We can confidently say that
his insights should be of great value to those struggling to
make investment decisions in this difficult market.
At July's TASSA meeting we held a panel discussion
with participation from those who attended - lead by Dr
Clive Roffey, Daan Joubert and Victor Hugo. The
subject was Global and JSE Market Trends with emphasis on
"Risk, Potential, Triggers and Drivers".
To give you an idea of the type of speakers we have at our
meetings, our speaker in June was Dana Wakefield.
She was a director of a leading firm of South African
stockbrokers until she left to start a market charting
Consultancy in 1998. She is a Member of The South African
Institute of Stockbrokers, and was ranked among the top
technical analysts in South Africa for ten years in the Financial
Mail stockbroking analysts ratings. The topic was Japanese Candlestick Charting, which
is a predictive form of charting developed by a Japanese rice
futures trader 300 years ago. Similarly to bar charts, but in
much clearer visual form, the concept uses candle patterns that
develop during price trends to understand changing market crowd
psychology and enable early, contrarian trading decisions. It's
fascinating to use and highly effective combined with modern
indicators.
Nick Goodwin gold
analyst, Fedsure Asset Management - did a presentation
on gold fundamentals and gold share trading in May.
