Inflation-Fighting  Investments

Everyone is talking about tough markets, inflation and the impact of inflation on our lives and the economy.  Many of us have already felt their personal budgets bite and watched their retirement investments suffer.

Our next Business Times Wealth Forum will look at the investment environment and ways to position your investments to fight inflation.  A difficult challenge, but nevertheless there are practical ways to invest to achieve the most for your portfolio, during these unstable economic times.

Absolute return funds are meant to be the way to achieve investment returns above inflation.  In these funds, the managers have the flexibility to adjust to the market conditions as they present themselves.  So h
ow absolute is absolute? Absolute return funds aim to protect investors’ capital and provide inflation beating returns, without losing capital over one-year periods. But returns from these funds have been as varied as their strategies, with most recent figures showing one-year returns ranging from 20.45% to -5.30%. One wonders how funds in the same category can deliver vastly different returns, and why fund managers seem to be unable to protect capital effectively, says Tamas Kulcsár of Glacier Research.  We’ve asked Steve Mills, Absolute return fund manager to help us to understand the potential and pitfalls of these funds in these current markets.  Tony Bell of Peregrine Quants will help us understand the investment environment and using this in your financial plan.  Janet Hugo of Hugo Capital will look at practical ways for us to invest during inflationary times.

Inflation and bear markets are the enemy. There are opportunities for those who structure their strategies.
